Different Types of Locks

When you’re going out to buy a new lock, you might not take the time to think about the type of lock you’ll buy. You’ll just buy the same one that is already on the door. However, if this same type of lock was compromised, you might want to take a little time to figure out what type of lock you’ll buy that won’t be as easy to compromise. Our locksmiths at South Milwaukee Locksmith in Milwaukee, WI install various types of locks. You name it we install it! When it comes to your safety and security, we have what you need. Your safety starts with the basics and this starts with the choice of locks you select. If you don’t choose the right locks, you could be jeopardizing your safety and that of your loved ones. You can find the right locks if you know what to look for.

If you know what you’re looking for prior to buying a new lock, it can be very helpful to you. You might be familiar with some of the names of some of the locks that are on the market but you might not know if they are of good quality or not. It can also be challenging determining which doors they should be installed on. There are some locks, which are interchangeable and can be used on different types of doors. If you have the right locks installed it could actually mean the difference between your being able to keep out intruders or not.

Here are some of the locks that are installed most often:

Deadbolt Locks

The best locks offered today are deadbolt locks. This lock is the best and most widely used and installed. It’s made of the best materials possible and this is why it is difficult to compromise this type of lock. If you don’t have deadbolt locks on your door, what are you waiting for? Don’t give burglars the invitation to break into your home. Deadbolt locks are not only durable but they are also affordable. With this in mind, you should give serious consideration if you want to protect your home and loved ones. They have a metal bolt that slides directly into the doorjamb. The latch is inside the keyhole and door. There are various types of locks to choose from, including deadbolt locks. There are also some deadbolt locks that you may not be familiar with that you can read about below.

Jimmy Proof Deadbolts – This type of lock is generally installed on double doors. The bolt is attached the doorjamb bracket. It is very difficult for the door lock to be pulled apart. The lock screws inside the door make it difficult for the lock to be compromised.

Single Deadbolts – Deadbolt locks are installed more than any other lock due to its level of durability. A single deadbolt has a thumb turn on the inside with the keyhole on the outside. This locks design and material make it extremely difficult to break. Often, a burglar will not attempt to break a deadbolt due to the amount of pressure and time it takes to break it. They want the route of least resistance.

Double Deadbolts – If you decide that this is the right type of lock for you, you have likely given it some serious consideration. This is because it can become a problematic lock if you are not able to find both keys to unlock the lock. It has a cylinder on both sides but doesn’t have a thumb turn. Some choose this lock because of its quality and durability.

Tips to Hire a Good Locksmith

Can you imagine hiring a locksmith to unlock a door for you and after waiting for hours, no one showed up? This has happened to a lot of people. Some people have even received some very sloppy locksmith services too. We’re really sorry for anyone who had to experience this, but there are still some very good locksmiths out there. You just have to know what to look for when hiring a locksmith.

If you live in Wisconsin, you will be happy to know that you have some excellent locksmiths at South Milwaukee Locksmith in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Whenever and wherever you need a locksmith in that area, give us a call and we will make arrangements to assist you promptly.

Many Locksmiths Are Great!

If you’ve had a bad experience with a locksmith, you may be scared to hire another one. No one can really blame you for that. Be cautious when hiring a locksmith, but remember that there are some very important qualities to look for when you are about to hire a locksmith. If you do not look for these things, you may end up in the same predicament as before.

Perhaps you have never hired a locksmith before but you have heard horror stories about them that have made you very hesitant to do so. Don’t think badly of locksmiths. You really can find some very professional, honest and reliable ones. Just like any other profession, there are professionals that do their job well and others who don’t do so well. You just have to be able to pick the good ones from the batch.

Good Locksmiths Are Easy to Find

Before you hire a locksmith, make sure you check them out thoroughly. Here are a few of the things that you should look for.
  • Reliability
How much sense does it make to hire a locksmith that is unreliable? Absolutely none! It doesn’t make sense to book an appointment to get your locks changed only to have your locksmith not show up. Make sure that the locksmith you’re hiring is very reliable. It can save you a lot of time and inconvenience. Ask around, check reviews online. You should be able to find previous customers that share their experiences.
  • Honesty
You may be wondering why this is a quality to look out for. Well, if you are going to have a locksmith in your home working on your locks, they must be honest. It would be quite an experience if things were to go missing from your home while the locksmith worked. Plus, there are locksmiths who tell you one rate when you call but charge you another once the job is complete. Try to find an honest locksmith so you will not have to go through unpleasant situations such as these.
  • Affordability
Some locksmiths try to charge an arm and a leg for very basic services. You don’t have to pay a fortune to get a good locksmith. Locksmith rates should be affordable and competitive. Although it may not be the wisest thing to go with the lowest priced locksmith, you definitely don’t need to hire the one with the highest rates.
  • Professionalism
Professional service from a locksmith is very important when it comes on to identification. If you hire a locksmith, you should be able to tell that the locksmith is from the company you hired. Whether it is an identification card, a uniform, a marked vehicle or some other means of identification, your locksmith should be easily identified.
  • On-time
How happy would you be to know that you made an appointment for 10AM, took a few hours off from work and your locksmith arrives at midday to deliver the service you requested? That would definitely be a waste of time. Of course, we know that things can happen. But locksmiths should be on time for their appointments at all time. Don’t settle for one that will show up when it is convenient for them.

Top Home Security Tips You Need To Make Your Home Safer Now

WRITTEN BY: JAYMI NACIRI

No matter where you live, your age, life stage, the square footage of your floorplan, or type of neighborhood, staying safe at home is a priority for all of us. And you can go out and spend thousands of dollars on security measures or DIY it at all, but the goal is the same: to protect your home, your things, and the people you love.

Home security is not a one-size-fits-all enterprise, nor is it typically a one-purchase-and-you're-done experience.

"Think of home security as though you're putting on layers of clothing to protect your body from harsh weather," Jordan Frankel, executive vice president of Global Security Experts said on Tech Hive. "Protecting your home from burglary is all about the layers. Because burglars determine their targets through risk vs. reward scenarios, the more security measures you put in place to increase the risk and lessen the reward for would-be intruders, the less likely your home will be viewed as an easy target."

Whether you're starting from scratch or looking to upgrade or enhance your security measures, here are eight places to start.

1. Secure the front door

It seems like a no-brainer to lock your front door and make sure it's secure, but, "Roughly 33 percent of burglars enter through the front door," said Safewise. Inspect it to make sure the frame is "strong, the hinges are protected, the wood is not hollow, and, if your door has a mail slot, that someone can't reach through it to unlock the door. If your door doesn't have a peephole or a deadbolt, you should install those immediately to help make the door even more secure."

And if you've just moved in to the house, don't forget to change the locks. Extra keys that may have been floating around prior to you moving in could compromise your safety.

2. Check the windows, too

This is another easy-access spot. Safewise notes that, "As many as 23 percent of home burglaries occur through first-story windows." Check the latches, which can degrade over time and fail to protect the windows from opening.

3. Light it up

A home that's dark will be more inviting to a potential thief than one that is lit up. We love the BeON Home Protection system, which can be used both inside and out.

"At first glance, the BeON Home Protection system looks like a trio of odd-looking smart LED bulbs," said Techlicious. It's actually a "sophisticated early warning system for your home, disguised and doubling as smart bulbs. Once you insert the yellow BeON peg module through the bulb and screw them into a standard A21 (Edison base) lighting fixture, each BeON bulb becomes a listening post that can hear and react to your front door bell ringing or your smoke/CO alarm sounding. When the BeONs hears one of these, the bulbs light up in an automatic or programmed sequence to either make it appear as if you're home to scare off intruders, or light your way to escape potential danger."

According to BeON, "The system picks up on your natural lighting habits so that there's seamlessly no noticeable difference between you being home and away. Since the goal of the system is preventative security, BeON wants the system to act as a deterrent days in advance, rather than as a reactive security system." You can also " train your BeON bulbs to hear your doorbell, and you can set a sequence of which BeON lights go on in reaction."

Uplights can give the home some great curb appeal and make it more safe, and motion-activated floodlights are another great theft deterrent. The added advantage of Mpow Solar-Powered Outdoor Motion Sensing Light is that it's solar powered, so it won't add to your electric bill or stop functioning in a power outage.

Ring's new Floodlight Cam is "the world's first and only HD security camera with built-in floodlights, a siren alarm and two-way audio," they said. "Floodlight Cam streams 1080HD video and comes with two 3K lumens LED floodlights, and it starts recording and turns on the lights as soon as it detects motion."

4. Get to know your neighbors

Establishing friendships in your neighborhood isn't just great for your social life; it can also help keep you safe. Your neighbors may already know your daily habits (what time you come and go), but alerting them to changes like a new job that means you'll be leaving earlier and returning later, cleaning crews or landscapers that might have access to the home or yard, and, especially, vacation plans that will leave your home empty for a period of time, is important. That way they can help keep an eye out and be aware of anything that just seems "off."

5. Get on Nextdoor

Your local Nextdoor community is not only useful for finding a babysitter or a handyman, but it's also a great place to share and learn about security issues like break-ins and car vandalism in your neighborhood. If you know what's going on, you have a better chance of banding together to come up with solutions to get it stopped.

6. Get it on camera

Having security cameras outside your front door may not stop a crime from happening (although it could deter someone who noticed the camera), but it can help you catch them on the backend by providing footage to police or circulating in your neighborhood.

Cnet recommends the SkyBell HD Wi-Fi Video Doorbell as one of the their best smart home devices. "With 1080p resolution, SkyBell's video quality is terrific, and integrations with Alexa, Nest, and IFTTT help it stand out in an increasingly competitive category," they said. "Free online video storage is a major plus, too."

7. Get a security system

Homes without security systems are about three times more likely to be broken into. The Simple Dollar has a thorough list of the best security systems for 2017 broken down by categories like DIY installation, cost, and reliability.

8. Eliminate hiding spots

It makes sense that burglars would target homes where they can't be easily seen. If you have tall shrubs or trees up close to the house, that might be you.

WHAT TO DO WHEN TRANSPONDER KEY IS LOST

Lost car keys are the worst! Not only do you feel helpless by being unable to drive your car, but you also worry about who finds your key and what they plan to do with it. Your mind typically goes through a series of emotions. You feel anger at yourself for being careless. You feel worry because your car may be in danger of being stolen. You feel anxiety because now you have an additional expense that you hadn’t planned on having. All of these stresses go through your head at once when you lose a regular car key, but when you lose a transponder key, the problem gets magnified a few times!

This is because transponder keys are harder to replace and more costly to duplicate. In fact, that’s the reason that they are so effective at reducing auto theft – the thief can’t affordably or easily make a copy of your key and steal your car!

Are my car keys transponder keys?

At this point you may be wondering if your car keys are of the transponder variety or not. That, of course, depends on how old (or new) your vehicle is. If your car is a model from 1995 on, it almost definitely uses transponder chip keys. Auto makers have adapted use of transponder keys since that time and have no plans whatsoever to stop using them. They have been so effective at cutting down the rate of car theft not only here in South Milwaukee, WI but all over the country!

Transponder keys transmit

The word transponder means to transmit and that’s the beauty of these special keys. They contain a computer chip embedded in the key’s head. This chip transmits a signal to your car’s computer. If the signal is recognized, the engine starts. If it doesn’t, your ignition system will not work and your car is going nowhere. Transponder keys are hard to duplicate. Not only is making a key copy expensive, only certain car dealers and locksmiths are allowed by the manufacturer to do so.

Car thieves can’t stealthily make a copy of your ignition key and put it back on your desk or in your purse. While non-transponder keys can be cut or copied at local convenience or hardware stores, true transponder keys cannot. Ironically, this also presents a problem for you if you ever lose or break yours.

Your key is lost; now what?

If you lose your transponder key, there are several options for you to take; few of them good. Here at South Milwaukee Locksmith we are often asked about these alternative ways to deal with a lost transponder key and what you are about to read is what we recommend.

Ordering online

Yes, transponder keys are sold online. Save your money! Buying keys like this will only result in frustration, money loss and time wasted. These keys are not authorized by the car makers and not only are refunds practically impossible to get, the keys don’t work! Then, there are shipping fees and waiting times to further frustrate you.

Transponder key insurance

While this may be legitimate depending on the company, the premiums are so high that you might as well just forget this alternative route altogether! Most people pay their premiums for so long without ever needing to actually have a transponder key replaced that they default on their payments and let the policy lapse. Our opinion; forget about it!
